Second Year Brownies 2002-2003

July 12-16
Shayna and Bri are the first  in our troop to attend Resident Camp at Camp St. Albans. They attended the Skits and Songs program.

July 29-Aug. 2
Nearly the entire troop attended Day Camp at our own local Camp Klahanee.

September 7
Many of the girls took part in our town's annual Logger's Playday Parade. Even in a downpour of rain, the drenched girls still marched proudly singing "Hooray For Girl Scouts", winning the second place in their category. Our council, Pacific Peaks, also honored and surprised all the Girl Scouts who marched  with a Council Service Segment. This was also the first year for Juli to be in charge of the Girl Scouts taking part in the parade.

September 18
At our first official meeting back the girls made bracelets while planning their own activities for the  coming year.

They also began working on their own Web Page (part of which you are reading), deciding on the topics, photos, and fun things they would like displayed.

September 25
The girls started the Art To Wear Try-It by doing face painting!!!

They also spent time preparing for the Peanut and Calendar Sale by going over the rules of the sale.

October 2
Continuing the Art To Wear Try-It, they created artwork on tee shirts with fabric markers.

The girls also decided to create a  Service Project by coloring pictures and giving them to retirement homes, hospitals, etc. to cheer people up.

October 9
The ZINK THE ZEBRA program started today!  Dianne Ward,  Bri's grandma, led the  program for the girls. She read the book to us and we discussed what makes each of us the same or different.

Also, the girls practiced a flag ceremony in preparation for performing the opening  and closing  ceremonies for the Washington  State Bowling Association.

The troop voted to name their Service Project  "Smiles Are Coloring Our Community" using a combination of their two favorite choices selected from a list they had made up while "brain storming".

Lastly, in having completed the orders for our Peanut/Calendar Sale, our Top Sellers were Bri with 51 items and Taylor with 41 items sold.

October 17
The troop continued the ZINK program today by discussing thr differences that make us special, creating their own Zink  books, and begining to design posters that tell what we learned from Zink...."Being Different Makes Us Special" and that we are  really all the same inside. Don't judge people by what you see on the outside.

October 23
The troop completed the Zink Program today by making posters for public display while some members of the troop role played various disabilities. The girls were quick to learn  that even a person confined to a wheel chair can do many things the able-bodied can do and can be the "same person" they were before they became disabled.  They learned to offer help when needed  but that just because a person needs help in one thing they don't necessarily have other disabilities. (For example,  a person who can't walk or has gray hair  isn't necessarily deaf, so don't yell at them or speak s-l-o-w-l-y!)

October 30
Today we had a birthday party for Daisy Low  and a Halloween party all wrapped up into one! We started by coloring our first set of pictures for the "Smiles Project" that the girls organized.

We then made very messy graham cracker Haunted Houses A small Investitute / Rededication Ceremony followed the party.

We also made butterfly SWAPS to send with Ruby, our mascot, as  she visits a troop in Michigan this month.

November 13
Christmas SWAPS and Ornaments for a National Girl Scout Ornament Exchange were the activities for tonight. The SWAPS consisted of beaded safety pins in a snowflake design, and an "instant snowman". The ornaments were of beaded wire Snowflakes and Angels.

November 20
This was the last meeting before Thanksgiving  so the girls made a great autumn leaf and turkey door hanger for the holiday.

They also completed another project for the Art To Wear Try-It by making paper-mache bracelets. What a MESS!

Shayna was sick and in the hospital in Olympia so we all signed a "get well" card for her.

December 4
Tonight we worked on a Washington State SWAP that will be sent in for a Thinking Day State SWAP with troops from all over the US representing their own states.

We also discussed  our "Self Interviews" with one another. These will be used  to make special pages for each member of the troop on our Website's Homepage.  Click on our faces on our homepage!

We also made some special Christmas crafts including a "Days Til Christmas" calendar / decoration, and a Christmas Mouse craft that was taught by Melanie and her mom, Jennifer.

December 11
Today we started the Caring and Sharing  Try-It led by Kayla and her mom, Cindy.  We had a lot of fun discussing what a real friend is  and how we can be a real friend to everyone. This Try-It was also done in connection  with the girls completing their delf interview "About Me" pages for this website.

December 18
Tonight the girls had a Christmas  pizza party by a unanimous vote and exchanged gifts by Juli reading one of the "Wright's Family Christmas" stories. (This is where the girls sit in  circle  and as the story is read, they pass the gift to the person on their Right or Left each time  that word is read. )  It made for a lot of giggles!

December 21
Christmas Cottage Event in Copalis. Angel, Bri, and Tiffani rode a chartered bus to the "Christmas Cottage Event" at a town near the ocean called Copalis Crossing. There the girls found many small cottages set up in stations where they made Christmas crafts at each one. All the troops also took turns singing Christmas carols at a small stage centered at the cottages. The girls had a BLAST! The whole bus continued to sing carols all the way back to Hoquiam!

January 8
We started off the New Year with more work on our Caring and Sharing  Try-It led by Kayla and her mom Cindy. THe girls started making their Friendship books with a twist to the directions already given. Instead of each girl making a book about her friends, the  girls wrote  nice things about each other on separate pages. Those pages were then given to th girls they were written about. This way each girl has a book that is about all the wonderful things their friends see in her.

Also today was the day to prepare the girls and parents for Cookie Orders!! We held a parents meeting during the last half hour to go over all the rules and information to start taking Cookie Orders on the 10th.

January 22
Today the girls completed the Caring And Sharing Try-It and their friendship books. They also helped stamp their Thinking Day Postcards so they could be mailed. Then they discussed activities for the troop to do over the next few months.  Our troop decided to have a "Four World Centers - Tasting Testing Party" for their Thinking Day event this year.  India, England, Switzerland, and Mexico are  where the Girl Scouts Four World Centers are located. We will be joining Troop 990 from Ocean Shores to celebrate these four countries on February 21st.

January 29
The girls started out their meeting with the addition of TWO NEW MEMBERS!!!
Welcome Kelly and  Briana!!!
As an opening acvtivity to our meeting we made designs for a paper "get well" quilt for the editor of ou local newspaper.  He recently announced that he os fighting cancer and with the girls having learned so much about cancer and other serious illnesses from the "Zink The Zebra" program, they were happy to do something to cheer him up.  The colored some extra Smiles pages to send him as well.

Angel, with the help of her mom Tammy, led the troop through the Playing Around The World Try-It. The girls were having so much fun  that they played every game listed in the Try-It rather than just picking four!

At the end of the meeting the girls got to read their first Pen Pal letters from a Brownie troop in New Jersey. The girls were excited to hear from their new friends and start writing back to them.

February 5th
The meeting started out today with a little troop business while they made Valentines picture frames. THe girls are getting more  and more excited about theirThinking Day Event as preparations are being planned.

Bri and her grandma Dianne (webmistress of this site) led the group in the begining of the Science Wonders Try-It. They talked about  what a scientist is and that it isn't just men who do this wide variety of jobs. They also had a blast learning hands-on about objects that can be attracted to a magnet, including oatmeal! The girls learned that the earth is a giant magnet  and each made a compass by magnetizing a needle.

February 12
At the begining of the meeting the girls made  heart shaped Valentines Card pouches for the party which was held at the end of the meeting.

Once that craft was completed, Bri and her Gramma Dianne brought  more fun with  magnets and other experiments  for the Science Wonders Try-It. They quickly figured out the secret difference between some Canadian nickels and our U.S. nickels. (Thank you, Gail in New Brunswick, Canada!)

Gramma Dianne told them why Cow Magnets are called  by that name (Girl's reaction, "euuuuuuuuw!!") and Bri used one to show them what a magnetic field looks like.  Then Bri read the story "The Nut Crisis"  in which a Brownie saves the town from disaster and then Bri had the troop break up in groups to try to figure out by experimenting with  a bunch  of different items how that Brownie did it and what the special item in her pocket was.

The highlight of the meeting  was our first "Sparky Party" when the girls did an experiment with Wintergreen flavored lifesavers. If the room is very, very dark  and you bite down hard on the candies "SPARKS" occur in your mouth. The girls  watched themselves in small mirrors ans watched each other too.  This is one time it's OK to chew with your mouth open!

They ended their meeting with a Valentine's party and exchanging of Valentines in the pouches they made.

They were given the supplies to make a borax crystal at home. They'll bring them back to show next week.

February 19
Today the girls completed their work on the Science Wonders Try-It.  They brought back their crystals and showed them to the rest of the girls.  The main subject of the experiments today was Chemical Changes. The girls learned about "acids" and "bases" and had a great time with different  experiments including  making copper cleaner,  testing various substances for a chemical reaction, making  invisible ink, and the most fun of all was blowing up a ballon by creating carbon dioxide with baking soda and vinegar.

Bri reported on an experiment that fit right in with this theme. She had made a "Naked Egg" and brought it for the girls to see and touch.

At this meeting the girls also learned how to wrap their own Saris. A Sari is a beautiful dress worn by women in India. The girls each have their own fabric  and will be wearing their saris to out Thinking Day Event this Friday!

The girls will also be wearing authentic Indian bindis thanks to a wonderful lady who donated them. (Thanks Rooby!) Bindis are  the beautiful body jewelry or "spot" worn  above and between the eyebrows.

February 21
World Centers Thinking Day Event
Tonight we celebrated the countries that host the Four World Centers of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS)  with Junior/Brownie Troop 990 of Ocean Shores.  India, Mexico, England,  and Switzerland  were represented by making paper crafts and sampling many foods from the four countries.  In honor of these nations we also have watched the Girl Scout video "Sisters All, Friends Forever" which is compiled of interviews of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts talking about what it is like to be part of a World Association and the Sisterhood of Scouting  while at the Four World Centers.

Our troops not only learned about our Scouting Sisters around the world  we also got to know and  make real friends with Troop 990! We plan to have other GS programs and adventures together in the future! Photos of this event will be posted soon.

February 26
Tiffani and her mom Missy took our troop on a field trip to a dentists office to help us earn the  Healthy Habits Try-It. We leaned a lot about how to take care of our teeth and how dentists can help us keep them strong and healthy for a lifetime!
